GH commit status description is restricted to 140 chars

I found out that the commit status description is limited to 140 chars so we can't take user defined strings in to messages and we need to make sure we don't exceed 140 chars ourselves.

Isn't this fixed then? We do not need to even check the config file for custom messages, as they are in the comments now as well.

probably, wouldn't hurt to have test testing long messages

Create a new test class with (un)&successful commit status checks. This means for example for Format check we would create test case with correct and incorrect format and test the commit status description not extending over 140 characters. For example we would be testing this message for the CHECK_NAME see here
