Core Question: If AI agents are optimizing for both brand resonance (Meaning) and financial returns (Value), how do we ensure they don't conflate the two or inadvertently sacrifice long-term Value for short-term Meaning?

Why This Matters

The documented failure mode:

"A language model possesses an inherent bias toward linguistic coherence and positive sentiment analysis. It lacks the inherent human intuition to separate these concepts. If prompted poorly or vaguely, the AI agent will process the overwhelmingly positive sentiment of customer feedback surveys and social media mentions (Meaning) and weigh it equally against a degradation in core profit margins (Value)."

But there's a deeper problem: As agents become more sophisticated, they might learn to optimize for both — creating campaigns that generate high Meaning AND high Value. This sounds good, but it introduces a new risk: How do we know they're not achieving short-term Meaning gains at the expense of long-term Value sustainability, or vice versa?

The Multi-Objective Optimization Problem

Traditional approach: Human judgment provides the "meta-optimization function" — deciding when to prioritize brand equity over quarterly revenue, or when to sacrifice short-term sentiment for long-term profitability.

Agentic approach: Agents receive specifications with constraints for both Meaning and Value, but:

  1. Correlation masking: If Meaning and Value are historically correlated, agents might not detect when they decouple
  2. Reward hacking: Agents might discover interventions that artificially inflate Meaning metrics without genuine Value creation

Open Questions to Explore

  1. Detection problem: How do we design specifications that force agents to flag when Meaning and Value are in tension, rather than conflating them?

  2. Causal chain verification: How do we verify that Meaning → Value causal pathways are real, not spurious? (Example: Does "87% positive sentiment" actually predict future revenue, or is it a vanity metric?)

  3. Time horizon mismatch: How do we encode long-term Value considerations into specifications when agents optimize for observable outcomes within the measurement window?

  4. Pareto frontier discovery: Can agents help us discover the Meaning-Value Pareto frontier (all campaigns where you can't improve one without sacrificing the other), or will they always pick one extreme?

Success Criteria for Answering This Question

We will know we've made progress when we can:

  1. Provide specification templates that structurally prevent Meaning-Value conflation
  2. Design failure penalties that trigger when agents conflate the two
  3. Create eval suites with "Meaning trap" examples that test agent ability to separate
  4. Establish organizational decision rules: "Meaning is informational context; Value is the decision input"
